El
Salvador
(Antigua - San Salvador - Suchitoto - Costa Brava)
A small country surprises
[November 7, 2004] I had lot's of respect of the border crossing,
but after 2 hours of discussions, copying various documents
and less a few bucks I was through. And after another hour
I was already in the suburbs of San Salvador. There I called
Bjorn, I got his address from a friend in Cologne. "Sure,
I'll come and get you" he replied with his openness although
we have never met. It's such a good feeling when you can rely
on others abroad.
And then very nice and relaxing days started with Bjorn and
his family. As he had been around Central and South America
for 15 years now he knew and gave me lots of tips. And they
showed me their county with their eyes, starting with the
Cristo del Mundo in San Salvador,
the once-war-deserted Suchitoto and the stunning Pacific beaches.
And the people here do work and act differently to the other
countries here in the Central American Region.
Suchitoto has today developed to a charming artist ciudad
with its emerging tourism, the signs of war are almost gone.
But still there are and will be for the near future the extreme
differences between the Rich and the Poor, resulting in i.e.
armed guards everywhere. A life behind bars
And they had another surprise waiting for me: real black
and dark bread just like home! With pickles, wheats or pure
grains, just great. I know that sounds weird but the ones
that have also been on the road a longer period will understand
me that after 6 months of soft toast bread I was hungry for
this. Thanks guys, just like an early Christmas present.
Now I had to leave the dream and wanted to continue my journey
to Honduras and Nicaragua, the
places I have heard so much about.
See ya
